Kettering Fairmont girls varsity bowling team opens league season with a victory

Kettering, Ohio – The Kettering Fairmont Firebirds girls varsity bowling team opened their 2021-22 Greater Western Ohio Conference league schedule Wednesday, December 1, 2021, against the Northmont Thunderbolts. The Firebirds traveled to Thunderbowl Lanes in Englewood to take on the Thunderbolts.



The two teams bowled two regular games a two baker games. In High School Bowling 5 bowlers participate in regular games by bowling their own 10 frame game. In Baker Games, each team fields 5 bowlers who each bowl 2 frames of the 10 frame game. Player 1 bowls frames 1 and 6, player 2 bowls frames 2 and 7, player 3 bowls frames 3 and 8, player 4 bowls frames 4 and 9, and player 10 bowls frames 5 and 10. A match can have between 2 and 5 baker games.

In the first regular game, Fairmont Senior Abby Derham bowled a 193. Senior Lillian Matteson added in a 232. Senior Ally Liming also contributed a 165 in game 1. Fairmont also fielded Freshman Danica Roseberry who rolled a 136 in game 1. The Firebirds’ final game 1 bowler Junior Natalie Benvenuto tacked on a 161. This gave Fairmont a total of 887 pins for game 1.

For game 1 Northmont’s Freshman Crystal Yingst countered with a 225. While Sophomore Kaylee Fritz added on a 201. Another Freshman Kaylie Hoff rolled a 171. Thunderbolt Senior Chelsea Goines contributed a 166 to the team total. The Thunderbolts also added in a 157 from an unidentified “Sub Bowler”. This gave the Thunderbolts 920 pins in Game 1.

Northmont’2 in game 1 gave them a solid 33 pin lead after the first game.

Derham upped her score in game 2 by rolling a 204, which gave her a 397 series. While Matteson slipped all the way to a 155 for a 387 series. Fairmont’s Liming bettered her game 1 total with a 173 that gave her a 338 series. Roseberry also improved in game 2 with a 166 for a 302 series. For game 2 Fairmont replaced Benevenuto with Junior Calahan Denny who tacked on a 126. This gave the Firebirds 824 pins for game 2 and a 2 game total of 1711.

In game 2 all 5 Thunderbolt bowlers bowled lower scores than they did in game 1. Yingst slipped to 201 for a 426 series, which was the high series for the match. Fritz rolled a 182 for a 383 series. Hoff contributed a 160 for a 331. Goines bowled a 152 for a 318 series. The Thunderbolts’ “Sub Bowler” rolled a 123 for a 280 series. This gave the Thunderbolts an 818 for game two. This gave Northmont a 2 game total of 1738 pins.

Despite having a lower 2nd game total than their first game, the Firebirds managed to make up 6 pins on their 33 pin deficit. So, they went into the two Baker Games down by 27 pins. Kettering soundly outscored Northmont in the first Baker Game by a score of 210 to 151. This gave Fairmont their first lead of the match 1921-1889. In the 2nd Baker Game and the final game of the match, Fairmont added to their 32 pin lead by outscoring Northmont 176-174.

The Firebirds’ solid performance in the Baker Games gave them an opening win in league competition 2097-2036.
