Kettering Fairmont Firebirds boys’ varsity basketball team moves to 3-0

Kettering, Ohio – Friday, December 3, 2021, the Kettering Fairmont boys’ varsity basketball team played host to the Northmont Thunderbolts. This was the Firebirds opening game for the 2021-22 Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) league competition. Fairmont entered the game 2-0 and Northmont entered play with a 1-0 record.



The Firebirds opened with a strong first quarter outscoring the Thunderbolts by an 8 point margin 14-6. But Northmont came roaring back in the 2nd quarter outscoring Fairmont by 12 points 18-6. With the score Fairmont 20 Northmont 24, this put the Firebirds behind at half-time by 2 baskets.

Kettering fought back in the 3rd quarter to outscore the Thunderbolts by 6 points 18-12. This gave the Firebirds a slim 38-36 lead going into the final quarter of the game. In the 4th
quarter, Fairmont reasserted their first quarter dominance and outscored Northmont 17-8. With the 9 point margin in the 4th quarter, the Firebirds secured their 3rd straight win by a 55-44 score.

Fairmont had two players reach double figures in scoring against the Thunderbolts. Senior Guard #12 Anthony Johnson led the Firebirds with 26 points on the night. Johnson made 8 of 17 attempts from the field and completed 4 of 5 3 point attempts. Johnson was also 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Johnson was also Kettering’s leading rebounder with 8, 7 defensive and 1 offensive. He also contributed 2 steals and 1 assist.

Firebirds Junior Forward #14 Jamison Rountree was the team’s second highest scorer with 11 points on the night. He was 4 of 6 from the field and made 1 of 2 3 point attempts. Jamison also contributed 2 blocks, 2 offensive rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist.

On a night where every point counted, starters Senior Forward #2 Dasan Doucet contributed 8 points, and Junior Forward #10 Eli Sherwood added in 6 points. Two Firebirds came off the bench to round out the night’s scoring. Junior Guard #22 Aden Marrero made 3 points on the night, and Sophomore Forward #21 Daniel Seaton made a free throw to add 1 point.

The Firebirds shot 38.1% from the floor making 16 of 42 attempts. They also had a 38.9% 3 point percentage making 7 of 18 3 pointers. Kettering made 64% of their free throws dropping 16 of 25 attempts from the line. Kettering had 24 rebounds, 13 defensive and 11 offensive, with 8 assists, 8 steals, and 4 blocks.

The Thunderbolts shot 39.5% from the floor hitting 15 of 38 attempts. The Thunderbolts only made 1 of 7 from 3 point range for 14.3% accuracy. But the Thunderbolts were 71.4% from the line hitting 15 of 21 free throw attempts. The Thunderbolts also outrebounded the Firebirds with 31 total, 19 defensive, and 12 offensive. Northmont had 8 steals, 5 assists, and 1 block.

Fairmont’s undefeated start to the season puts them on top of the GWOC standings. Fairmont’s next game is Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 7:30 against the Springboro Panthers. The game will be at Fairmont’s Trent Arena, 3301 Shroyer Road, Kettering. Springboro opened the season with a 2-1 record, notching wins against Xenia (73-53) and Beavercreek (51-45) and taking a loss against Mason (69-57).
