Kettering Fairmont Firebirds boys’ basketball team defeat crosstown rivals Archbishop Alter Knights.

Kettering, Ohio – The Kettering Fairmont Firebirds boys’ basketball team hosted their crosstown rivals the Archbishop Alter Knights Tuesday, December 14, 2021. The game was played at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.



The visiting Alter Knights took control of the game early. The Knights outscored the Firebirds by 10 points, 17-7, in the 1st
quarter. In the 2nd quarter, Fairmont held Alter’s lead to 10 by playing to a 14-14 tie. This made the half-time score Alter 31 to Fairmont 21.

The Firebirds came out roaring after halftime to outscore the Knights 14-6 in the 3rd quarter. With the score 37-35 in favor of Alter, Fairmont had a 2 point deficit to make up in the 4th
quarter. Fairmont outscored Alter by 12 in the 4th quarter, 20-8. This gave the Firebirds a 55-45 victory over the Knights. The Knights took their first loss of the year and dropped to 4-1 on the season. The Firebirds remain undefeated at 5-0 on the season.

Fairmont had two players in double digits on the knight, but Senior Guard #12 Anthony Johnson was by far and away the Firebirds’ high scorer. In fact, Johnson was the high scorer amongst both teams by 18 points. Johnson put 31 points on the board. He shot 9 for 13 from the floor and hit 5 of 8 3 point attempts. Johnson was also 8 for 9 from the free-throw line. Johnson also contributed 13 rebounds, 12 defensive and 1 offensive, 2 assists, and 1 steal. He also committed 1 turnover and 1 personal foul. Johnson’s 31 points was his highest scoring game of the year so far.

Senior Forward #2 Dasan Doucet scored 10 points on the night and was Kettering’s second highest scorer. Doucet was 3 for 9 from the field and 1 for 4 from 3 point range. He was also 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. Doucet also had 5 rebounds, 3 defensive and 2 offensive, and 2 assists. Doucet also committed 4 turnovers and 3 personal fouls.

The Firebirds' remaining 14 points were divided amongst 5 players. Junior Guard #22 scored 5, Junior Forward #14 Jamison Rountree scored 4, Junior Guard #1 Cadyn Hower scored 2, Junior Guard #3 Logan Adams came off the bench to score 2, and Junior Forward Eli Sherwood also came off the bench to contribute 1 point.

As a team, the Firebirds shot 40.9% (18 of 44) from the field, 24.0% (6 of 25) from 3 point range, and 76.5% (13 of 17) from the free-throw line. The Firebirds had 30 rebounds, 24 defensive and 6 offensive, 18 assists, and 6 steals. Kettering also committed 10 turnovers and 9 personal fouls.

The Knights also had two players who had double digit scoring. Senior Guard #2 Ryan Chew topped the Knights in scoring with 13 points. Chew shot 5 of 15 from the floor and 2 of 8 from 3 point range. Chew also hit 2 of 8 from the free-throw line. Chew also contributed 2 steals and 1 defensive rebound. He also committed 7 turnovers.

The Knights’ second highest scorer was Senior Guard #24 Jacob Conner. Conner added 10 points to the Knights’ total. He shot 4 of 8 from the field, 1 of 3 from 3 point range, and 1 of 1 from the free-throw line. Conner also had 8 rebounds, 6 defensive and 2 offensive, 3 blocks, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Conner did not commit any turnovers or any personal fouls.

The Knights also received scoring contributions from Junior Guard #12 Gavin Geisel – 9 points, Junior Guard #21 A.J. Leen – 8 points, and Junior Guard #3 Anthony Ruffolo – 5 points.

As a team, Archbishop Alter shot 39.6% (19 of 48) from the field, 22.7% (5 of 22) from 3 point range, and 66.7% (2 of 3) from the free-throw line. The Knights also had 18 rebounds, 15 defensive and 3 offensive, 11 assists, 6 steals, and 3 blocks. The Knights had no personal fouls but did turn the ball over 11 times.

Kettering will take their undefeated record up against the 3-3 Miamisburg Vikings Friday, December 17, 2021, at 7:30 P.M. Miamisburg has secured wins against Tecumseh 55-32, Carroll 47-30, and Lebanon 49-30. But the Vikings are winless in their 3 Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) games losing to Wayne 59-53, Centerville 71-39, and Northmont 41-32. The Firebirds v. Vikings game will be played at Fairmont’s Trent Arena, 3301 Shroyer Road, Kettering. Tickets are $5 for seniors and students (ID may be required) and $7 for adults.
